It was in May 1979 when we visited India (first visit for Hema after she came to U.S. in 1975) with Rajesh as a two year old baby. This trip was full of excitements! We left Rajesh with his grandparents and Hema's sisters and took the train to Hyderabad to meet my maternal grandfather and Uncle Mani's family. Malathi had also come over to Hyderabad at that time with Padma and Vasu. That train journey, instead of taking the normal 12 hours took 48 hours due to heavy out of season cyclone rains like the one in A.P this week (*). Even getting something to eat at the train station restaurants was a big challenge..but we made it a little tired but not sick. Grandfather liked the Theraatupaal Hema made for him very much.

We had to cut short the trip to just one day and fly back that night to Madras.

"Though I did not have the opportunity to interact much with Hema manni, I remember her as a chirpy, vivacious person when she visited us in Hyderabad.
My memory of her is vivid and I will cherish that." - Sujatha Balasubramanian Feb 3, 2013

It is 12 years today (Jan 16, 2016) that Hema left us . She was in and out of hospitals since 1992 after the trip to India ...though she was an insulin dependent diabetic since 1981 she seemed to have more energy than I did sometimes working in two jobs and still able to cook when she got home. Heard Dr. Sundaram say that it was the long term effects of diabetes in 1995 but no Doctor spent a few minutes with us in 1981 educating us on possible but not inevitable long term effects..of course the "Health care" system does not reward them for such efforts ...now we have the Internet and Facebook but it still needs proactive efforts on the person affected to change life styles
